The Nursing Council of India is an Autonomous Body under Indian Government and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It was constituted by the Government of India under section 3(1) of Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947 of parliament. The reason was to establish a uniform standard for training of nurses, health visitors and Midwives. The body does the following functions:

1. By doing regular inspection of the institutions to establish & monitor a uniform standard of nursing education for nurses, health visitors & Midwives.

2. To recognize the qualifications of the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947 which is necessary for the purpose of registration & employment in India as well as abroad.

3. Providing approval for registration of Indian as well as Foreign Nurses possessing foreign qualification under the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947.

4. To prescribe standards of education & training in various nursing programs, as well as prescribe the syllabus and regulations for Nursing programs.

5. It also has the power to withdraw the recognition of qualification if the institution fails to maintain its standards, if an institution recognized by a State Council for the training of nurses, health visitors and midwives does not satisfy requirements of the Council.

6. To give advice to the State Nursing Councils, State Governments and Central Government, Examining Boards in various items regarding Nursing Education in the nation.

7. Regulating training policies & programs in the field of Nursing.

8. Recognizing Organizations/Universities/Institutions imparting Diploma/Certificate Courses/ Bachelor’s Degree/Master’s Degree /P.G. Diploma in the field of Nursing.

9. Recognizing Certificate/Diploma/Degree awarded by Foreign Institutions/Universities on reciprocal basis.

10. Promoting research in Nursing.

11. Maintaining Indian Nurses Register for registration of Nursing Personnel.

12. Improving quality of nursing education.
